Thirty Reasons Lyrics Life is full of pain. Such hopelessness. No matter what you try To make come to life It’s a bitter trail to follow One foot behind the other Stand up and talk to your father Fathers listen close And give your son some time alone Listen to the anger storm Bring it back home. Facing up to fury Facing signs of exhaustion It’s a cowboy in a can It’s a boy alone. Chorus: What does it mean When you gotta go to work? What does it mean When you gotta work hard? What does it mean When it doesn’t mean a thing Doesn’t mean a thing Doesn’t mean a thing Go! Go! Go! Go! I can think of thirty reasons Why I’m where I am today All the things I didn’t do And all the things I did. I don’t have a lot of regrets Because I’m still too young to Say “I’ll never get to do this or that.” I’ll never be an American I’ll never be a mother I’ll never take my vacations In Hawaii. I am too smart to do that Chorus Somewhere in the back of All this hand to hand I’m grinding on a big knife Living out my days as catch can Against the backdrop Of a well known museum Crying “Where are my muscles?! “Where are my muscles?!” Someone told me How to live my only life in peace. Someone else just told me how to Live it better. Someone tells me “Every thing is wrong!” Maybe they are right Maybe I’m the only man alive tonight Chorus

Join the army Fight in a war. Have a baby Work in a store. I hear it in both ears from the Schools that want a well defined saviour. Theres got to be a better way to understand and encourage creative behaviour. Can you blame it on your daddy? Has he just been made the caddy For a lot of resentment? Can you blame it on your mommy 'Cause she had you in her tummy When she was full of life? Join the army Fight in a war. Have a baby Work in a store. Everybody knows who I am And has an opinion of me. There's a waterfall within That appears to become this opinion There's a stagnant bog of nightmares giving birth to these and more opinions There's another place that we can go Beyond the farthest stretch of your imagination. Einstein has a dream about what matter is 'Cause it matters to him. Maybe he just made it up to see If he could make it up and see it Maybe he forgot that criminals can turn what matters Into anti matter People all too soon forget the safety In the forest of their dreams.

Slag Heap Love It fits like a glove It's a heart made of steel It's a slag heap love It breathes in the cold It feeds in the dark It lives in the heart of industrial parks It's a slag heap of love. Well I get on the bus in Kapuskasing. Got to get back to my baby. She works in the supermarket right across the parking lot. She wonders if I'll pick her up I wonder does she care a lot. We wonder if it's all there is or If we're in the dark about it. Talk about it. Oh Canada our home and native land True patriot love in all thy son's command; With glowing hearts we see thee rise The true north strong and freezing. We want more than a stupid corner store Selling smokes and combs and chocolate bars And alcohol to grease balls More than a chuck blade roast and a frost bit strip And the heavenly, heavenly host We're just hanging 'round the laundry mat Talking 'bout real life and where it's at Round the corner. 'Round the corner by the Super Stack Slag Heap Love It fits like a glove It's a heart made of steel It's a slag heap love

Under the pines Where the pale moon shines And the roses touch entwined This garden rambles under shade Far different than mine. So it seems I’d step upon you if I could Maybe ‘cause my hearing’s not so good I would hear a squeak and wonder “What’s that sound?” After I had blindly cut your throat And put you in the ground People who are told that they are stupid will appear as such People who are told that they are smart think they deliver much People who are hungry remain hungry While the gunfire it continues Making little puffs of smoke around our eyes. Out of the nose of the volcano Whence dawn’s first finger glows A palm tree bright with gathering light Collects December’s snow. Under the pines Where the pale moon shines And the roses touch entwined This garden rambles under shade Far different than mine. Watch for the joys of capitalism As they spring forth in your life Watch for the boys of Mexico City As they strangle rats for tonight’s supper Sitting in a quiet office Waiting for the phone to ring Speaking with a shoeshine man I hear the virgin sing: I am here under the sky I must survive. At what cost do we shoot ourselves And poke our brothers in the eye?

You gave me some money from that old bell jar You gave me some glamour juice milked from the stars You gave me a haircut. Said "This is so divine!" And you showed me how to polka and here's what I cried: That I don't want to polka with you no more. And I don't want to pee in your back yard And I don't want to munch on your kiwis And I don't want to cry for my wee wee You gave me a sausage from your mommy's saloon You gave me a boat ride to your favourite lagoon You gave me a slimy swamp with crocodiles inside I didn't want to fight them but still I tried! Chorus You gave me crimson and a toast black cigar You gave me bitter and nights at the bar You gave me a caramel with slimy swamp inside (?) I didn't want to eat it, but still I tried. Chorus

Dutch Boys 04:35
Three young Dutch boys Wearing woollen pants Waiting for their labour Smoking cigarettes The first one spits And the tall one laughs Third one smiles in his caress. Three young Dutch boys Lean against the wall Leather caps shine In the breath of the fall Wind and weather wet The metal pipe as it bestows Cable clamp and task at hand On young men against the wall Chorus We want to hoot and holler We want to wallow in the water We want to shine on the lips Of all mankind We want to dine like no other A circus! A circus! Young people cry in pain. Three rings drawn by withered limbs Three rings drawn by Withered limbs are what remain For a moment of joy Sustained Look at these spinning Inventions of ours Hear the music Smell the wine Look what we've put In the light for you Hear what we sing Drink what we provide. Chorus Three young Dutch girls Lean against the wall Should I have a baby Should I work work work What about this guy I see Lurking 'round the corner What about these other girls With their back against the wall? What about that woman Went to school when she was young, Did she get her papers ? Did she have some fun? Did she ever find something To make it all worthwhile? Or did she just forget about Her back against the wall...

Four Friends 03:18
Four friends walking on nature's limb Beating out a message on life's breast Eating winter's leaves and singing songs of times gone by Who has the merrier soul, young man, woman or I? There's a long branch growing inside the slippery elm Some dusty sod busters searching for the grail Mighty thunder grows on every blade of grass Singing "Who knows what for, why? Because I'm alive! I'm alive! Young man, young man, don't be late Walk this woman home. She lives at Bathurst Gate. Crazy enough to be alive and call it enough. These are empty times... Lonely times! Chorus Well I'm eating empty times 'til a pearl clatters Mercilessly in my bowl and rolls around 'til it's Standing stock still This gem is naked, naked in it's glory! Lonely times, what am I to do?

Already Gone 02:45
Met her in a parking lot for vessels glory bound Maybe we were going somewhere, Maybe Owen Sound. Maybe if she got my message, maybe I'd get hers Maybe we'd get there together Maybe we'd disperse And live our only lives alone. Living our only lives alone. I'd be here and she'd be there. I'd go there and she'd come here We're never going to manage face to face Let alone being in the same time at the same place It was hard when it was hard I could never understand Why she'd always get so angry When I was playing it with the band I'd have to be so quiet I couldn't play a note If I made a little squeak She'd shove it down my throat Shove it down my throat And that's why we live our lives alone Living our only lives alone.

about

This album was recorded in August 1989 or 90 and released the following summer. It was recorded for broadcast on a CBC show called The Entertainers then commercially released on Festival Records. We had just finished a three week run in the Agriculture Pavilion at the Canadian National Exhibition. Fellow performers included a giant moving sculpture of a salmonella bacteria and giant apple eating worm. We were in top form when we hit the stage at North York's Earl Bales Park that steamy summer evening.
