This song was first in a theatre piece that I conceived called "Trumpets Into Spring". It was based on a dream that I had about myself and a couple of friends in an "On the Waterfront" sort of scenario where tasks were being assigned. The second verse pertains to my own particular fascination with the theatrical way of life. The third verse pertains to a friend at the time and her desire to become a lawyer.
lyrics
Three young Dutch boys
Wearing woollen pants
Waiting for their labour
Smoking cigarettes
The first one spits
And the tall one laughs
Third one smiles in his caress.
Three young Dutch boys
Lean against the wall
Leather caps shine
In the breath of the fall
Wind and weather wet
The metal pipe as it bestows
Cable clamp and task at hand
On young men against the wall
Chorus
We want to hoot and holler
We want to wallow in the water
We want to shine on the lips
Of all mankind
We want to dine like no other
A circus! A circus!
Young people cry in pain.
Three rings drawn by withered limbs
Three rings drawn by
Withered limbs are what remain
For a moment of joy
Sustained
Look at these spinning
Inventions of ours
Hear the music
Smell the wine
Look what we've put
In the light for you
Hear what we sing
Drink what we provide.
Chorus
Three young Dutch girls
Lean against the wall
Should I have a baby
Should I work work work
What about this guy I see
Lurking 'round the corner
What about these other girls
With their back against the wall?
What about that woman
Went to school when she was young,
Did she get her papers ?
Did she have some fun?
Did she ever find something
To make it all worthwhile?
Or did she just forget about
Her back against the wall...
